Tech Camp: The Secret Behind the Data of TV and Movies

Collecting data from different sources, then combining analyses from each dataset gives a better understanding of a situation at hand. This approach, “data quilting,” is much like assembling a quilt: separate pieces of data come together to form a more complete view so that better decisions can be made. This camp will introduce girls to analytics and the basic concepts of layering different types of data to answer complex questions. Using an episode of a popular TV show, the girls will combine the analyses of several data types to form insights and conclusions about relationships between different characters. They’ll analyze motion data from the characters’ movements, text data from the episode’s script, and social network data from character interactions, then combine analyses to gather and present insights, sharing how all components collectively tell the story.
