Writing What You Know: Where Creative Non-Fiction Meets Fiction

Open to beginning and intermediate writers, students will learn to draw on their own personal histories, as well as family and community legacies and legends, as material from which to craft both creative nonfiction and fiction. By using the research and journalistic tools of creative non-fiction and the storytelling techniques of fiction,students will spend the week practicing writing as a process of discovery.

Through lecture, discussion, workshop, critique, and one-on-one instructor conferences, students will move through the writing process from brainstorming and drafting to revision and preparing for publication, all while learning conventions of both creative nonfiction and fiction, insider tips and tricks, and crafting two works. Camp will culminate with an optional public reading event showcasing the students reading their work alongside established writers.
